How to Pray without Ceasing – Guest Post

How to pray without ceasing

We have probably all come to 1 Thessalonians 5:17 and wondered what to do with it. I know I have! For those not familiar with the passage, 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says simply that we are to “Pray without ceasing”.

At first glance, this might seem an impossible command to obey. Pray without ceasing? What about my responsibilities as a wife or mother or homemaker or friend? How can I “pray without ceasing” when there are so many other things to do?

I would like to answer these important questions today with two points.

1. There Should not be Long Seasons Where We Go Without Praying.

The first way we can obey this verse is by making sure that we are not allowing the busyness of our everyday tasks to invade and hinder our prayer lives. When life is hectic and the to-do list looms large, it is easy for prayer to be the first thing we drop when we believe ourselves to be too busy. But we mustn’t do this. Matthew Henry writes in his commentary,

Praying without ceasing

“The meaning [of 1 Thess. 5:17] is not that men should do nothing but pray, but that nothing else we do should hinder prayer in its proper season. Prayer will help forward and not hinder all other lawful business, and every good work.”

To be faithful to “pray without ceasing” then, one need only make prayer as regular a feature of each day of the week as possible. Rather than going months without communing with the Lord in prayer, purpose to meet with Him daily, and you will be praying without ceasing.

2. Offer Up Little Prayers as You Go Throughout Your Day.

One thing I got into the habit of doing years ago is just simply offering up several little silent prayers to God as I go throughout my day. While you are doing the dishes or cooking dinner or tending to the needs of your children, you can easily offer up a prayer of thanksgiving, ask the Lord for wisdom or help, or mention the prayer request your friend shared with you the other day. This is a great way to obey the command to “pray without ceasing”!

Be Encouraged!

I hope you were encouraged today, friend, by the true simplicity of this command. Far from making this some legalistic or difficult box to check, merely go to your Father and share your heart. He yearns to hear from you!

  1. Indeed! Great read. I have had several situations in my life where I prayed without ceasing until God told me it was no longer necessary. Once when my dd had an enlarged heart and another example is when I thought I was losing my son to miscarriage.

  2. Great post!
This is hard sometimes, as a Christ loving follower I worry- am I praying as much as I should? Then I think of the verse, Phil 4:6,7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
I am so thankful to have such an understanding Lord, to forgive us as if it never happened. What great love!
    Thanks for sharing!

  3. One thing I’ve found really helpful? Setting an alarm on my phone to remind me to pray for certain people or situations. How often do we say we will pray for someone, but we just forget! A simple alarm prompts me to offer up a prayer on their behalf.
(P.S. I’m happy to see another Puerto Rican writing and encouraging others in their faith walk!!)

  4. As we draw closer to Him, it’s more like talking to a friend throughout the day….I wouldn’t go an entire day without talking to my dearest Friend!
